Azerbaijan has a rich history of rug weaving going back several centuries. Due to its geographic location, it stands at the crossroads of various cultures, and its carpets reflect this in their richness and beauty. As such, these pieces are highly sought-after, well-known for their wide range of designs and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours.

This early 20th Century example, dating to c. 1930, empoys an open composition worked a wide variety of vegetable dyes – these include tones of camel, olive green, ochre red and muted charcoal, all set across a fresh ivory ground, and framed by a border of good proportions. The graphic motifs in the drawing are excecuted in a grand scale, lending the work the bold, expressive feel, reminiscent of earlier examples of the 18th Century.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, its organic dyes have taken on a characterful patina with age.

An interesting tribal weaving, with a characterful yet simple design, to suit a wide variety of interior styles.
