Unlike many of the other Persian rug-weaving cities, Qum only established itself a centre of production in the early 20th Century, though its carpets quickly established a reputation for the elegance and precision of their designs – this piece is certainly no exception: retained in very good condition for everyday use, the richness of the dye, the grade of the weaving, and the skill of its makers are all visible in every detail.

In this c. 1930s example, a highly talented artist has paid great attention to the rendering of the dynamic floral spray across the central field, with roses in red and cornflower blue; a well-balanced, creative all over design, uncommon in pieces of this type. Being a relatively early piece for its region, this rug is woven in lustrous, high grade Merino wool, and with organic vegetable dyes.

In very good condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides – its organic dyed colours have taken on a mild, age related patina.

Among the most individual, creative examples from its region and era we’ve had the pleasure of adding to our collection, which would work as well as a wall hanging as it would on the floor.
