The Shahsavan people, indigenous to Northern Iran and Azerbaijan, are renowned for their weaving expertise, particularly in creating fine, durable flatweaves. Their work often features bold, graphic designs reminiscent of Caucasian carpets, with a tribal charm that has made them widely popular decorative pieces, renowned for their strikingly modern quality.

This striking example, dating to c. 1900, is a rare find that blends historical craftsmanship with a surprisingly contemporary feel. Its composition is defined by soft, earthy hues—tan, tobacco, sage green, red ochre, and indigo—arranged in horizontal bands across the field. Abstract motifs are employed throughout, offering a creative decorative touch that enhances its understated, minimalist layout.

Preserved in excellent condition, the kilim still retains its onopened, original fringes on both sides – remarkable for a piece of this age. Its vegetable-dyed palette has aged beautifully, developing a rich, mellow patina over time.

A sophisticated piece of tribal art, this rug’s restrained colour scheme and clean geometry would complement a a wide variety of spaces.
